Broadcasting constantly makes it impossible for other people to talk, and is selfish. There is a time to talk on the radio, and a time to listen. It is when you eavesdrop that it becomes sandbagging, which is not cool to people trying to have a private conversation. ![]() It is acceptable to listen to other people talk, as long as you notify them you are listening in, often by saying “I’m 10-10 on the side” or “I’m 10 in the wind”. This is the trucker term for when a person listens in on a conversation without speaking, and without letting anyone know you are listening. There are many different resources you can use to become fluent, here are a few. you need these phrases to make conversation easier, and make yourself sound professional. Not saying “over” or “10-4” is also bad too. As an example, ending every sentence in “good buddy” is annoying. The truckers don’t like it when a rookie gets on the radio and messes up the CB slang. CB lingo is an important part of talking properly. Here are some links to help you come up with your own handle, and to show some other people’s handles. There are websites to help you come up with a good handle, if you cant think of one yourself. It might be a little funny the first time, but it isn’t that funny, and would get old. And yes, There is a guy with that handle, and I read about him on a forum. It is also not cool to make your handle something super inappropriate, like the guy who makes his handle “the Virgin surgeon”. For instance, “snowman” and “rubberducky” are off limits, because even though every poser with a 10 dollar radio wants to have these handles, you will never be as cool as rubberducky or the bandit or pig pen. It is not okay to use famous CB handles for yourself. A good handle is a necessary part of having fun on your CB radio, but it is important that you make your handle both original and appropriate, like my handle “greasemonkey”. This is acceptable when used in moderation, but it makes a lot of people mad when you are yelling into the mic at 500 watts, modulating everyone’s radio out and making a bunch of crappy sound. You can buy illegal linear amplifiers that will boost your transmission power to anywhere between 50 or so watts to 500+ watts. this will effectively limit the range to 5 miles for most people, if you follow the law. CB radio’s transmission power is limited by the FCC to 4 watts of transmission power. Now that I am part of the culture, I would like to list some of the things that rookies do that make all the other CB users mad, and make us not want to get on our radio.ġ. In recent years, they have experienced a resurgence in popularity among hobbyists, and I am proud to say I am part of this resurgence, ever since last weekend. CB radios have been around for decades, and have been a viable and fun means of communication for truckers and everyday drivers alike. ![]()
